Se entiende por contaminación la presencia en el aire, agua o suelo de sustancias o formas de energía no deseables en concentraciones tales que puedan afectar al confort, salud y bienestar de las personas, y al uso y disfrute de lo que ha sido contaminado. Esto es, un medio o vector ambiental (aire, agua o suelo) estará contaminado si tiene algo (sustancias materiales, energía en forma de ruido, calor...) que provoca efectos negativos en él. Si ese algo no provoca efectos negativos, no se dirá que el medio está contaminado y, por supuesto, ese algo no será nunca un contaminante.

That is, a medium or environmental vector (air, water or soil) will be contaminated if it has something (material substances, energy in the form of noise, heat ...) that causes negative effects on it. If that something does not cause negative effects, it will not be said that the environment is contaminated and, of course, that something will never be a contaminant.
